Joe Kidd (1972) – Review

A former bounty hunter called Joe Kidd (Clint Eastwood) is an all-round tough guy and the American reluctantly agrees to help wealthy landowner Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall) and his fellow henchmen track down Luis Chama (John Saxon), an extremely charismatic Mexican revolutionary leader, who is demanding land reform and makes the costly mistake of stealing Joe Kidd’s horses. A thoroughly watchable western that was originally released fifty years ago in July of 1972. It’s worth noting that Joe Kidd is now streaming on Netflix.

Chisum (1970) – Review

As one of the original founders of the town of Lincoln, John Chisum (John Wayne) is increasingly worried as Lawrence Murphy (Forrest Tucker) moves in on the local stores, bank and general land, using questionable means in the process. Chisum, along with a fellow rancher, tries to use the law to stop this from happening, but confrontation starts weighing in on the feud, which then involves characters such as Pat Garrett (Glenn Corbett) and Billy the Kid (Geoffrey Deuel). A visually appealing movie that features an effective storyline too.

The Power of the Dog (2021) – Review

Charismatic but troubled rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those that are around him. When he finds out that his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) has fallen in love and married a woman with an older son, Phil torments the pair mercilessly, but exposes his own frailties in the process. A decent drama that has been receiving a large amount of praise. The Power of the Dog is now streaming on Netflix.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) – Review

During the American Civil War, three men of completely different temperaments get involved in a dangerous and unforgiving adventure, which pits them against each other in order to find a fortune of gold that has seemingly been buried in a cemetery many miles away. One is an ex-bounty hunter who lives by a certain honourable code of conduct, while the second is a fast-tempered, greedy former convict, with the third being a cruel and heartless murderer. An all-time great that is widely regarded as one of the finest films to hit our screens.

Hell or High Water (2016) – Review

Out in rural West Texas, two brothers, reeling from the death of their mother, face the agonising prospect of losing their family ranch to the Texas Midlands Bank. Toby Howard (Chris Pine) hatches a plan, along with Tanner Howard (Ben Foster), which sees the pair team up to rob different branches of the bank, hoping to raise enough cash to keep the home. Meanwhile, two Texas Rangers make it their mission to prevent the thieves from causing more carnage in their hometown. Hell or High Water is a widely acclaimed thriller that was originally released in 2016.

Young Guns 1 (1988) – Review

During the late 1800’s, John Tunstall (Terence Stamp) is a successful rancher that picks up young gunmen from the dark depths of despair and has them work on his large ranch, while also attempting to coach them back into becoming everyday citizens. When, however, he his gunned down by a rival rancher, all hell breaks loose, and the young men, spearheaded by Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez), become deputies in an attempt to avenge the murder of their friend and mentor. An action-packed western, released in 1988, that is more than worth a watch.
