A broad group of American researchers stationed at a remote Antarctic research facility, find themselves facing a terrifying threat after stumbling across a mysterious lifeform capable of imitating other living things. With the situation quickly deteriorating, helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell) and the other members of his team must work together to identify the creature before it completely takes over. An at times shockingly gruesome Sci-Fi flick that combines elements of horror, mystery and suspense too.

Drive (2011) – Review

An unnamed stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) spends his days working as a mechanic and driver in the movie world, while occasionally taking on jobs as a getaway driver for criminals in Los Angeles, United States. Living a relatively quiet life, he soon develops a friendship with his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her young son, before becoming involved in a dangerous situation following the release of Irene’s husband from prison. Initially, he seems to have been pulled into a simple job, but this quickly snowballs into something far more serious. A memorable and equally as stylish crime thriller that has developed somewhat of a cult following. It’s worth noting that Drive is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Duel (1971) – Review

Ordinary American salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) finds himself travelling along the lonely highways of California, United States, before becoming locked in a terrifying battle with an unknown truck driver after a harmless overtaking manoeuvre. As the relentless pursuit unfolds, it gradually escalates into a deadly game of cat and mouse. An extremely easy-to-follow premise, yet a picture that still holds up in today’s era of filmmaking. It’s worth noting that Duel is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Storm Over the Nile (1955) – Review

Set during the British military campaigns in Sudan, British officer Harry Faversham (Anthony Steel) resigns from his post on the eve of his regiment’s deployment. Branded a coward by his friends and the woman he loves, he sets out to prove his courage by traveling to Sudan and disguising himself as a native, embarking on a dangerous mission to redeem his honour. A thoroughly watchable historical drama that relies more on its characters and dialogue than anything else.

The 300 Spartans (1962) – Review

Set in 480 BC, the cruel and merciless King Xerxes (David Farrar), leads his two-hundred thousand strong Persian army towards Greece, with hopes of invading and conquering the nation in its entirety. The brave and determined Spartan army, led by King Leonidas (Richard Egan), battle against these forces at the narrow pass of Thermopylae, in an attempt to free the country of Greece. An importantly historic tale that is worth a watch, but somewhat underwhelming in stages.

The Batman (2022) – Review

Set within the crime riddled Gotham City, The Batman follows a young Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), who has spent his early years as a masked vigilante, striking fear into criminals. When a sadistic killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano) begins targeting important figures across the city, Batman is pulled into a complicated web of corruption that runs deeper than expected. A darker, effective, albeit more grounded take on the Batman character, with this flick leaning heavily into the detective style of filmmaking, rather than outright action and violence.
