When a police detective, John “Scottie” Ferguson (James Stewart), is forced to retire from the force due to personal reasons, he quickly becomes embroiled in an obsession of two beautiful women in quick succession. After the first seemingly commits suicide, he attempts to transform the second into the same lady, while pondering whether the pair have some sort of spiritual connection. Another classic flick but one that doesn’t quite hit the dizzy heights of its contemporaries.
A man stranded in the Arctic sees a helicopter in the distance, that looks set to rescue him from the dire situation he finds himself in, but suddenly the chopper crashes, and there’s only one surviving person onboard. From then on, Overgard (Mads Mikkelsen), must ensure not only his own survival, but the survival of the crash victim, who is badly injured. Leaving the relative safety of his improvised home, he embarks on a potentially fatal trek through the Arctic, in a bid to find support for them both. A movie that sends you effortlessly through a mixture of emotions and is definitely worth a watch.
A wheelchair-bound photographer named Jeff (James Stewart), finds himself housebound and out of bored curiosity, begins spying on his neighbours from his own apartment window, before quickly becoming convinced that one of them has murdered his own wife. Jeff enlists assistance from his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), and nursing assistant to investigate, while hopefully uncovering the truth. A timeless and captivating classic that despite the straightforward storyline, rarely includes a dull moment.
After several children from different families are suspected to have been killed by wolves that roam the area, writer Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright) is hired by the parent of one of the missing children – a six-year-old boy. Russell is tasked with the mission of tracking down her missing son and also to locate the animal responsible, all while navigating the dangerous Alaskan wilderness. An interesting Netflix movie that had the potential to be far better than what eventually transpired.
Set in 1933, notorious bank robber, John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his fellow gang members are hunted by the FBI after Dillinger’s popularity begins to soar and their dangerous attacks become more frequent. Head of the FBI, Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), is determined to stop the gang and tasks Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to hunt and consequently eradicate the mob. A really interesting tale of cat and mouse played out as a feature film – certainly a good watch, despite the relatively long runtime.
Ron Perlman stars as Asher, an ageing hitman that is slowly coming to the end of his career. Despite struggling through illness, he decides to pair up with a younger prodigy, but when that doesn’t go as well as originally anticipated, Asher and the people he cares for become vulnerable targets themselves. Not the most remarkable of movies but on the other hand, not the worst as far as low budget New York based feature films go.
