After Tim (David Spade) seemingly meets and then consequently invites the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to the beautiful island of Hawaii, he quickly realises he’s mistakenly sent the invitation to someone else – a previous date who turned out to be nothing short of a nightmare from the get-go. From there on, chaos ensues. Unfortunately, not one of the finest releases from Netflix who seem to be very hit and miss in the comedy genre.
Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) undertakes a mission to cross the lonesome and ruthless solar system in an attempt to uncover the truth about his missing father’s doomed expedition thirty years ago, which now seemingly threatens the universe. Dangerous and unknown energy surges could be linked to the disappearance and it is up to McBride to find out. A stunning film that excels visually but perhaps lets itself down in terms of the pacing and storyline.
At fourty-seven years old and fresh from a ten year stint in jail, Al Capone (Tom Hardy) finds himself in Florida, “living like a King” but begins suffering from dementia and the demons in his head, while the feds also do their best to get him back behind bars. At just under two-hours long, this is an insightful look into the slow and haunting demise of one of the most notorious gangsters of all time.
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, violence stems after an alien race are forced to live within the slums of the country, before the government begin to plot their removal from the area known as District 9. The race, named “Prawns”, have been on Earth for almost thirty years but now their initial welcome by humans has disappeared. The man overseeing the removal operation, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), finds himself exposed to an unusual chemical that ironically forces him to rely on the assistance of two “Prawns” to save him. A really bizarre but at the same time equally as interesting flick that’s currently on Netflix.
After Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) manages to escape from the clutches of her former partner, he then surprisingly takes his own life and leaves her some of his fortune, only for things to become a little complicated in the process. Cecilia is then tasked with the mission of trying to explain the strange occurrences that have began in a bid to prove that she is being haunted by somebody she cannot see and not losing her mind. A fairly easy watch movie that excels in the first half before faltering somewhat in the latter stages.
When two children first meet and consequently spend an entire week at their grandparents’ house, things begin to become complicated as the youngsters start unearthing worrying signs and dark secrets about their relatives. Becca (Olivia DeJonge) is the older of the two children and with help from her brother, Tyler (Ed Oxenbould), she decides to use this trip as an opportunity to film a documentary, but the budding filmmaker bit off slightly more than she could chew. An unexpectedly scary and extremely dark movie that does no shame on the horror genre at all despite many of the critics it’s received.
