Into the Wild (2007) – Review

Upon graduating from Emory University in the United States, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) decides to donate his entire twenty-four-thousand-dollar savings to a charity of his choice, before hitchhiking across the vast American country to Alaska, where he plans on living alone, in the wilderness. While on this journey, the young man finds himself encountering a number of characters that help shape him as a person and his own outlook on life. A thoroughly unique and at times emotional journey, with one or two questioning moments, but overall worthy of watching.

Stillwater (2021) – Review

Bill Baker (Matt Damon) travels all the way from Oklahoma in the United States to Marseille in France, to try and help his estranged daughter Allison Baker (Abigail Breslin), who has been imprisoned for a crime that she claims to be innocent of. Along the way, new relationships are formed, and old relationships are strained, in this emotionally striking drama. A really good and at times thought-provoking film that has recently been released to cinemas.

The Vanishing (2018) – Review

Based solely on the Flannan Isle mystery in the early 1900’s, three lighthouse keepers on a secluded island for six weeks, stumble across a hidden trunk of gold after an unknown boat crashes into their land. Little did the trio know that this would introduce an uncomfortable amount of pressure into each of their lives, ultimately leading to the disappearance of all three of the keepers. An incredibly well made and at times tense film that was originally released in 2018 – well worth a watch.

The Lost City of Z (2016) – Review

Culminating in a mysterious disappearance in 1925, this movie follows the true story of the British explorer, Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who travelled deep into the Amazon and discovered apparent evidence of a previous civilisation, more advanced than some had originally thought. While being ridiculed by the British establishment back home, the determined explorer continues to return, in an attempt of proving his findings. An intriguing true story with a great cast, that was released in 2016 and is overlooked by some.

American Honey – 2016

Star (Sasha Lane), a teenager with very little to lose, is charmed into joining a group of traveling misfits on their quest to sell magazines across America. While riding the turbulent waves of partying, law bending and young love, Star and the rest of her group do their best to survive, while also doing their best to have fun and experience life to its fullest. A greatly underappreciated movie in my opinion, with a lengthy but worthwhile runtime.

Body Brokers (2021) – Review

Utah (Jack Kilmer) is a young man, invited to Los Angeles for treatment to correct his long-running issues with drug abuse. The recovering addict quickly learns that the rehab center he was introduced to, is not all about helping people at all, but mainly a cover for a multi-million-dollar operation that includes addicts recruiting other addicts that they know of. An insightful movie, more than worth the watch, but at the same time, probably not one with much kind of rewatch value.
