Passengers (2016) – Review

In the distant future, a select number of humans attempt to travel to another planet for a better life away from Earth. The journey lasts for decades, so each of the passengers upon the spaceship named Avalon, are put into a state of hibernation. On the journey, however, something unexpected happens – one of the passengers, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), is awoken and must resign himself to not seeing the end of the voyage. Out of loneliness, he starts to question whether or not he should wake other passengers. A fairly unique and well-made film that is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Marksman (2021) – Review

A local rancher (Liam Neeson) living near to the Arizona border quickly becomes the unlikely defender of a young Mexican boy and his helpless mother, after the pair were desperately trying to flee from the cartel assassins, who will stop at nothing to see them both killed. Released originally in January of 2021, The Marksman has recently been added to the ever-expanding Amazon Prime Video catalogue – a simple but effective story that is more than watchable.

Out of Sight (1998) – Review

Jack Foley (George Clooney) is a career bank robber that manages to break out of jail, with the assistance of his friend Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames). The pair also manage to kidnap a United States Marshal in the process, but after the Marshal manages to escape, she begins to plot the demise of the cons that kidnapped her, only to have second thoughts after finding one attractive and sharing a connection with him. An impressive picture that was released in 1998, and one that is still highly rated among some movie lovers.

Entertainment (2015) – Review

A broken, middle-aged comedian (Gregg Turkington) attempts to revive his dwindling career by playing a handful of dead-end comedy sets in the Californian desert, while on the way to meet his estranged daughter. I think it’s safe to say that Entertainment won’t be a film for everyone, but this slow-burn drama has an appealing cast and some easy on the eye cinematography to make it almost watchable on the whole – certainly not one I’ll be recommending, however.

The Guilty (2021) – Review

Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a demoted police officer going through testing times, assigned to an emergency call dispatch team and becomes somewhat conflicted when receiving a frantic call from a kidnapped woman, known only as Emily (Riley Keough). Things begin to slowly become more apparent as time goes on, but so does the complex situation Joe Baylor finds himself in. This unique and at times gripping drama has just recently been released on Netflix.

Valkyrie (2008) – Review

The year is 1944 and most senior German officials know that their country is about to lose the war. Honourable surrender seems the only way out, sparing a countless number of deaths in the process, but that is not going to be possible with Adolf Hitler (David Bamber) at the helm. Consequently, operation Valkyrie was set up to eliminate Hitler, this being led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise), an officer that had previously lost his left eye and right hand in combat. When things don’t go according to plan, however, the situation becomes hostile. Valkyrie is an impressive World War 2 based flick that was originally released in 2008.
