Mudbound (2017) – Review

An impressive and equally as emotional tale of two men that return home from their World War 2 exploits to continue working for their respective families in Mississippi. One of the families being black and the other being white – they are forced to share the same patch of land but the relationship that the two returning veterans strike up begins to take center stage in a time of segregation and hatred. A really good movie and insight into what life must have been like for families from contrasting backgrounds during this era.

Uncut Gems (2019) – Review

A movie centered around Howie Ratner (Adam Sandler), a fascinating New York City jeweler, who’s struggling to cope with a crippling gambling addiction as well as the breakup of his family. Howie, however, seems to have hit the jackpot after sourcing a rare uncut rock of Ethiopian gems, but he continues to push his luck and ultimately pays the price for actions. A marmite movie for some, that perhaps got a little too much hype for its own good before being officially released to audiences. Uncut Gems is currently streaming on Netflix.

After being caught up in the shooting of a young and seemingly innocent man, Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg), is a cop that consequently loses his job, forcing him into eventually working for Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) in a job that from the outside seemed simple enough, but this proved to be just a minor piece of a much larger and more complex puzzle in this politically charged drama.

Owning Mahowny (2003) – Review

Dan Mahowny (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) is a troubled man struggling to get through a gambling problem, or as he refers to it as, a financial problem. A rising star in his profession (banking), this story superbly portrays the effects of his actions on not only himself but his colleagues, friends and partner Belinda (Minnie Driver).

The Irishman (2019) – Review

Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) is man coming to the end of his life, reflecting on the moments that defined his mob career, in particularly getting involved with Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and consequently Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) – a powerful man tied closely with organised crime, who vanished mysterious in late July, 1975. A sensational, well-made movie, that is currently streaming on Netflix.

As the award season approaches, Marriage Story presents us with a thought provoking, insightful and empathetic look at a couple, Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), who are struggling to get through a marriage breakup, while trying to protect their eight-year-old child, Henry (Azhy Robertson).
