Polar (2019) – Review

A surprisingly action-packed movie that follows a talented, yet haunted hitman, who is nearing his retirement date and ready to collect a pension pay-out from the company he has been employed with. Unbeknown to him, he must fend off the same companies attempts to end his life, thus cancelling the pension pay-out he is expecting. In my opinion, one of the best films of 2019, but in the opinion of others, Polar is considered just a cheap and nasty John Wick rip-off. It’s worth noting that this movie is based on the Dark Horse Comics of the same name (Polar) with Mads Mikkelsen adopting the role of Duncan Vizla – the hitman.

Asher (2018) – Review

Ron Perlman stars as Asher, an ageing hitman that is slowly coming to the end of his career. Despite struggling through illness, he decides to pair up with a younger prodigy, but when that doesn’t go as well as originally anticipated, Asher and the people he cares for become vulnerable targets themselves. Not the most remarkable of movies but on the other hand, not the worst as far as low budget New York based feature films go.

Apollo 11 (2019) – Review

An unbelievable look at the American led Apollo 11 space mission that landed successfully on the moon and returned to earth in 1969. The mission was led by commander Neil Armstrong and two fellow pilots – Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. The film manages to capture the events spanning all the way from the initial launch preparation to shortly after the safe competition and touchdown back on earth. A truly spectacular documentary based on, at the time, the most dangerous space mission of its kind.

Wheelman (2017) – Review

Frank Grillo stars as the “Wheelman” – a getaway driver that has to work for mobsters in an attempt to pay off a debt. After being assigned to a seemingly routine bank heist, he quickly comes to the realisation that he may have been betrayed by his main contact and consequently spends the evening trying to save himself and his family from the gang demanding the stolen loot. As far as short Netflix feature films go, this gritty thriller isn’t the best but it’s certainly not the worst.

You Were Never Really Here (2017) – Review

Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) is a hired gun that is employed to track down missing girls for a living but when a particular job spins out of control, Joe’s own nightmares and traumatic experiences almost tip him over the edge. As he attempts to track down and rescue Nina Votto (Ekaterina Samsonov), a more complex conspiracy begins to unravel before him. A surprisingly creative and thought-provoking movie that is well worth a watch.

Lost Girls (2020) – Review

An intriguing story that revolves around Mari Gilbert (Amy Ryan), whose daughter disappears mysteriously and draws little to no action from local law enforcement. Because of this, Mari decides to take matters into her own hands and investigate her daughter’s disappearance, before later unearthing several other missing or murdered young girls in the same area. It’s worth noting that this review was based solely on the movie I watched at the time and not the true story it was based off.
