Passengers (2016) – Review

In the distant future, a select number of humans attempt to travel to another planet for a better life away from Earth. The journey lasts for decades, so each of the passengers upon the spaceship named Avalon, are put into a state of hibernation. On the journey, however, something unexpected happens – one of the passengers, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), is awoken and must resign himself to not seeing the end of the voyage. Out of loneliness, he starts to question whether or not he should wake other passengers. A fairly unique and well-made film that is currently streaming on Netflix.

Good on Paper (2021) – Review

Andrea (Iliza Shlesinger), is a stand-up comedian, hoping to make it in Hollywood as a successful actress, that has prioritised her career for a multitude of years, but when she accidentally meets Dennis (Ryan Hansen) at an airport in a chance encounter, this nice, smart, seemingly successful man, enters her life and causes havoc in various different ways. This new comedy isn’t the worst thing to hit our screens as of late, but it’s certainly not the finest either. It’s worth noting that Good on Paper is currently streaming on Netflix.

American Honey – 2016

Star (Sasha Lane), a teenager with very little to lose, is charmed into joining a group of traveling misfits on their quest to sell magazines across America. While riding the turbulent waves of partying, law bending and young love, Star and the rest of her group do their best to survive, while also doing their best to have fun and experience life to its fullest. A greatly underappreciated movie in my opinion, with a lengthy but worthwhile runtime.

Ride or Die (2021) – Review

Rei Nagasawa (Kiko Mizuhara) is a woman that finds herself murdering the abusive husband of another woman that she’s been in love with for over ten years – Nanae Shinoda (Honami Sato). While on the run together after the murder, the pair rekindle their feelings and try to enjoy the last moments they have together, before their freedom is ultimately taken from them. An at times striking drama, filmed and captured in Japan, that has just been released to Netflix.

Love the Coopers (2015) – Review

In anticipation of a family reunion around the time of Christmas, four generations of the same Cooper clan come together for their usual annual festivities. Upon each making their way to the gathering however, an unfortunate series of events, along with unexpected visitors, turn the night on its head, forcing many of them to revaluate their own life as well as their family bonds. Not the most cheerful and upbeat Christmas film this season, but one that provides a fairly festive and authentic festive feel.

Operation Christmas Drop (2020) – Review

Based on the beachside of an American Air Force base in Guam, Congressional aide Erica (Kat Graham) is tasked with unearthing reasons as to why the facility should be defunded and closed. Captain Andrew Jantz (Alexander Ludwig) is assigned to show the aide around, but it’s quickly apparent that the pair begin to clash after the real reasons for the visit start to shine through. A new romcom with a Christmas based feel released by Netflix that isn’t the worst way to spend an evening, but it’s probably not the best either.
