Ad Astra (2019) – Review

Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) undertakes a mission to cross the lonesome and ruthless solar system in an attempt to uncover the truth about his missing father’s doomed expedition thirty years ago, which now seemingly threatens the universe. Dangerous and unknown energy surges could be linked to the disappearance and it is up to McBride to find out. A stunning film that excels visually but perhaps lets itself down in terms of the pacing and storyline.

The Salvation (2014) – Review

Set in America during the late 1870’s, Jon Jensen (Mads Mikkelsen) finds himself intent on extracting revenge on the men responsible for the barbaric murder of his wife and young son. Fuelled with vengeance and very little help from authority and people around him, he begins realising that the killers are involved with a gang that rule the town, headed by Henry Delarue (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). A really good and relatively realistic western worthy of the ninety-two minute runtime.

Hang ‘Em High (1968) – Review

After a sinister gang of nine men accuse former Marshal Jed Cooper (Clint Eastwood) of killing a rancher that owned the cattle he was transporting, they leave Cooper hanging from a tree and close to death. Upon being rescued and brought to Fort Smith, his innocence is eventually proven and Judge Fenton (Pat Hingle) invites Cooper to once again become a lawman and implement stricter rules and regulations in the area – a task Cooper is happy to take with the nine men that tried to take his life firmly in his sights. A really enjoyable and effective tale of revenge that is currently available on Netflix.

A Quiet Place 1 (2018) – Review

Two parents must do whatever it takes to keep their children safe and as far away from the fearsome and murderous creatures that are seemingly roaming earth as possible. Consequently, the entire family are forced to live in total silence while remaining hidden away from the monsters that have ultra-sensitive hearing but no vision at all. A tremendously unique and gripping film that has fans eagerly awaiting the release of part two.

Polar (2019) – Review

A surprisingly action-packed movie that follows a talented, yet haunted hitman, who is nearing his retirement date and ready to collect a pension pay-out from the company he has been employed with. Unbeknown to him, he must fend off the same companies attempts to end his life, thus cancelling the pension pay-out he is expecting. In my opinion, one of the best films of 2019, but in the opinion of others, Polar is considered just a cheap and nasty John Wick rip-off. It’s worth noting that this movie is based on the Dark Horse Comics of the same name (Polar) with Mads Mikkelsen adopting the role of Duncan Vizla – the hitman.

Good Time (2017) – Review

Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) is a man driven by a strong love for his mentally challenged brother, Nick Nikas (Benny Safdie), and finds himself determined to provide for a better future for the pair by robbing a bank. After the job is botched, Nick becomes the unfortunate one that finds himself locked up inside Rikers Island – much to the despair of Connie. From there, Connie’s tricky quest of freeing his brother begins. A relatively good watch that greatly shadows the more recent release, Uncut Gems. Good Time is currently streaming on Netflix.
