The Tender Bar (2021) – Review

Junior (Tye Sheridan) is a boy growing up on Long Island, seeking to find a father figure to replace the one that abandoned him shortly after birth as well as doing his best to please the rest of his family. Spending a large amount of time at his uncle’s bar, Junior begins to listen closely to all the patrons and their stories, learning on a daily basis before leaving for Yale University and becoming a writer. An easy to watch and relaxed drama that is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The Power of the Dog (2021) – Review

Charismatic but troubled rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those that are around him. When he finds out that his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) has fallen in love and married a woman with an older son, Phil torments the pair mercilessly, but exposes his own frailties in the process. A decent drama that has been receiving a large amount of praise. The Power of the Dog is now streaming on Netflix.

Apollo 13 (1995) – Review

Less than one year since man first walked on the Moon, Apollo 13 should have been just another routine space flight, until the immense void of outer space had its say. Stranded hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth in a semi-destroyed spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) must fight a desperate battle to survive and reach their homeland, in this race against time drama. A solid cast lead this must-watch Sci-Fi for any space lovers out there.

Alien Covenant (2017) – Review

The year is 2104 and the spaceship Covenant is heading towards a remote planet in order to colonise it. The ship’s captain, however, is killed in a freak accident, leaving another man in charge. The newly instated captain then makes the decision to investigate a planet that is nearby, after hearing a rogue transmission. Following the decision to explore the planet, dramatic and deadly consequences start to occur. A fairly enjoyable film that certainly started better than it finished.

Prometheus (2012) – Review

The year is 2093 and a small team of explorers, spearheaded by the accomplished archaeologist, Doctor Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), find a structure on a distant moon, hoping it shows clues to the origin of mankind, only to soon realise they are not alone on the desolate exomoon, LV-223. An appealing film that was somewhat criticised upon its release in 2012 – Prometheus is now streaming on the Display+ platform.

The Counselor (2013) – Review

A greatly successful lawyer, better known as the Counselor (Michael Fassbender), finds himself engulfed in a drug trafficking scheme, before quickly realising things aren’t going as smoothly as he’d originally anticipated. When things take a wicked turn for the worse, he must protect not only himself, but his soon to be bride Laura (Penelope Cruz), before he and the men he is working with are slowly eliminated. A quirky thriller that’s less than predictable and was originally released to audiences in 2013.
