Struggling away from home and finding his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) quickly finds himself drawn into the glitzy world of the charming and extremely wealthy Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who consequently invites him to Saltburn, his wildly eccentric family estate, for a summer never to be forgotten. A unique plot which will more than likely divide opinion, but in my eyes, worthy of a watch. Saltburn is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Director: Emerald Fennell
Writers: Emerald Fennell
Starring: Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant
Directed and written by Emerald Fennell, Saltburn is the second major film release from the director, after the April 2021 release of Promising Young Woman. The film is set almost twenty years ago in the mid-2000’s, giving the picture a slightly retro feel and convincing enough disconnect from current technology which dominates our lives today. Saltburn has received lots of praise since its release in November of 2023 as well as several award nominations.
In terms of the story, Saltburn delivers a somewhat dark and at times disturbing tale to the audience, with controversial themes such as obsession, privilege and sex all prevalent throughout the runtime. The flick also manages to include a surprising number of twists, as well as a plethora of shockingly unsettling moments, many of which come across as tense and unpredictable in nature.
One of the primary strengths to Saltburn would have to be its classy, easy on the eye cinematography demonstrated by the filmmakers. Scenic filming locations such as Drayton House in Northamptonshire, England, were on display, as well as Magdalen College in Oxfordshire, England. The detailed costume and set design were also noteworthy, with both fitting the overall theme of the film tremendously. Not only was the film impressive visually, but the writing also stood out as being clever and intelligent, with lots of dark humour also injected.

In terms of the cast, Barry Keoghan adopted the role of Oliver Quick, while Jacob Elordi portrayed Felix Catton, both commanding a large majority of the one-hundred and thirty-one minute runtime. Elsewhere, support reigned in from various angles, with Archie Madekwe and Sadie Soverall depicting Farleigh Start and Annabel, respectively, while more notably Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant also starred.
Overall, Saltburn is a stylish drama that dives into the somewhat messy side of privilege and obsession. While it might not be for everyone because of its bold and darker themes, it’s a film worth watching if you enjoy stories with twists and turns as well as beautiful backdrops. As previously noted, Saltburn is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
“I was a lesbian for a while, you know, but it was all a bit too wet for me in the end. Men are so lovely and dry.”
