Murder Mystery 1 (2019) – Review

Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) is a New York cop that takes his wife Audrey Spitz (Jennifer Aniston) on a long awaited European trip in an attempt to reinvigorate their relatively stale marriage. Instead, however, the pair end up tangled in the middle of a murder case after witnessing the death of an elderly billionaire. A solid Adam Sandler comedy flick that contains two or three genuine laugh out loud moments, but probably isn’t something you’ll be watching again anytime soon.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Director: Kyle Newacheck
Writers: James Vanderbilt
Starring: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Luke Evans

It has to be said that Murder Mystery 1 is a surprisingly good movie that takes place against an at times, stunning backdrop – with the majority of the flick taking place on a beautiful super yacht. The story was simple to comprehend and follow throughout, as the filmmakers made this as easy as they could to understand what was going on for the watcher. The stylish and equally as exotic setting across Europe and aboard the yacht itself, really added to the movies worth.

At times it was far-fetched and a tad unrealistic, but in the world of comedy where nothing is off limits, what else should we expect? One of the main scenes within the picture, sees Jennifer Aniston’s character square up against a hugely successful Formula 1 Grand Prix driver in a heated racing contest – not the most realistic, but it did provide some form of entertainment regardless.

For a large majority of the runtime, Murder Mystery came across as a classic “whodunnit”, where as a viewer, you were left wondering who actually committed the murder that was witnessed by many. The two lead characters, Nick and Audrey, did really well in terms of being relatable to the viewer as the everyday American couple that somehow found themselves on a boat with some of the richest people in the world.

In terms of acting and casting, Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston showed very good chemistry from the off and the rest of the cast were funny and well placed throughout with nobody looking particularly out of place. There was even an appearance from David Walliams which was great to see and was sure to put a smile on any British viewers face. Other support came in the form of Luke Evans who played Charles Cavendish and Gemma Atherton who did a great job as Grace Ballard.

With the above being said, it’s probably safe to say however, that this movie wouldn’t have fared too well if it had been given a cinematic release, but in the world of Netflix, this does no shame on the comedy genre and their library of movies on a whole. As It’s worth noting that Murder Mystery 1 is currently streaming on the platform.
